Greek Orthodox Youth Of America

GOYA

GOYA has been an integral part of St. John’s since the 1960s, forming the foundation of our parish youth ministry for over six decades. Generations of teens have grown up in this program—learning their faith, making lifelong friendships, and becoming active leaders in both the church and the wider community. Many of today’s adult parishioners once stood where our current GOYAns now stand—serving in the altar, volunteering in the community, and competing in tournaments as part of the Denver Diocese. The tradition continues today with the same spirit of unity, service, and faith.

The goal of the GOYA ministry is to assist our young people to understand and experience the Greek Orthodox Faith, while providing a foundation that will guide and strengthen them into adulthood.

Goyans for Giving

Goyans for Giving

Originating in 2024-with the goal of youth community involvement, is the charitable arm of our GOYA program, empowering our youth to serve with compassion and humility. Through hands-on community outreach, we bring the Orthodox spirit of philanthropia to life—feeding the hungry, helping the vulnerable, and spreading Christ’s love in practical ways.

Recent Event: Kountze Commons

Friday, December 27th, 2024

Our GOYAns served at Kountze Commons (2665 Douglas St, Omaha), offering warm meals and kind fellowship to those facing food insecurity. St. John youth participated, showing the strength of our faith through action. The evening concluded with a group dinner—a moment of joy and reflection for all involved.

The Goyans for Giving team will continue actively planning more service-based events through the year, including Christmas meal distribution, and partnering with local food shelters and food pantries.

All youth in the community ages 11–18 are encouraged to get involved, and families are always welcome to support these efforts.

GOYA Basketball & the Denver Diocese Tournament

One of the highlights of the GOYA year is the annual Basketball Tournament hosted by the Denver Metropolis, where GOYAns from across the diocese—spanning multiple states—gather to compete, worship, and connect.

More than just basketball, this weekend-long event is a powerful opportunity for youth to build friendships with fellow Orthodox youth, experience spiritual bonding through liturgy and fellowship, representing St. Johns with pride and sportsmanship.

Our GOYAns are not just players—they’re active participants in making the tournament experience happen. They take responsibility in fundraising for travel, uniforms and registration. They are responsible for organizing and serving in the Fellowship Hall.
Which teaches the GOYAns the importance of teamwork, planning and stewardship.

Through these efforts, our youth develop invaluable life skills—planning, accountability, and service—while growing closer to their peers and community.
Participation in the tournament is a cherished tradition at St. John’s, and one that continues to shape confident, faith-driven leaders.

Goyans are coached by Vasili Sakkas and Yianni Sgoura
